DUI Information
Insurance after DUI
Insurance premium charges may increase by 2-3 times after a California DUI conviction. Many insurance companies verify your driving record. Although, accidents, tickets, and drunk-driving convictions may escape your insurer's attention, insurance companies are notified when a DUI conviction occurs in California. It is likely you will pay higher auto insurance premiums or your policy may be cancelled.
If your insurer discovers your California DUI conviction and raises insurance premiums, you have to file proof of insurance for three to five years with DMV. Your insurance company will have to provide the DMV with an SR-22 form, which removes your license suspension by providing the state with proof of insurance. An SR-22 also means your insurer notifies the DMV if it cancels your insurance for any reason.
As per California DUI law, a DUI convict needs to submit a SR-22 that is obtained from the insurer. The California DUI conviction cannot be hidden. Some insurance companies don't furnish SR-22 policies, thus you may run the risk of non-renewal or cancellation.
Some states don't allow insurance companies to revoke insurance policies in the middle of the policy term for a DUI in California. Make sure you know the laws in your state so that you don’t let your insurer cancel your policy during the coverage period.
